Spotted Mountain Bells (Fritillaria atropurpurea), also called Checker Lily throughout much of the West, has flowers 1/2-3/4 (1.3-2 cm) long, and leaves at least 15 times as long as wide. It is a member of the lily family (family Liliaceae). Lilies are mostly perennial herbs from rhizomes, bulbs, or corms, some rather woody and treelike, with often showy flowers in racemes or branched racemes.
