Plant Description: A tall, sun and moisture loving populus tree species that grows quickly, becoming mature in just 30-70 years. Often growing at least 100 feet tall, its trunk is a dark black, and it has shiny pointed leaves, catkins, and fluffy "cotton" inthe summer time.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: Typically one of the first species to produce in disturbed flood planes, Black Cottonwoods grow quickly. They are known to be somewhat brittle and make great habitat trees, snags, and cooling logs across streams and rivers.
