Originally imported from Afghanistan, the ‘Salavatski’ Pomegranate is a cold hardy variety that can be grown as far north as zone 6B with winter protection. Reddish-orange flowers appear in late spring and early summer with fruit ripening in late fall. It’s a self-fertile variety so no cross pollinator is required. The large red fruit have thick skin and crunchy, juicy seeds inside that can be eaten fresh in salads or made into juice. It prefers full sun for best fruit production and is adaptable to almost any type of well-drained soil. Can reach up to 6 feet in height and bears fruit 1-2 years after planting.
