Plant Description: Heartshaped deep green-red leaves with spiked flowers. Mat forming groundcover native throughout much of Oregon, including the Willamette Valley. Leaves and roots are edible with a bright, sour flavor.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: Mountain Sorrel often grows in alipine locations, but adapts well to lower elevations. Extremely cold hardy and used to growing under packed snow, this plant is known as one of the first plants to grow after glacial melts. Mountain Sorrel is high in vitamin c and makes a great addition to food forests as a ground cover. Attracts moths, butterflies, small mammals, and pollinators.
