Mushroom Log Care:
Place logs somewhere exposed to rain that is very shaded and wind protected.
The Fungi needs a humid, low-light environment to fruit.
They are very cold tolerant, as long as they are shielded from harsh wind.
—
In summer, ensure the logs do not ever fully dry out.
In very hot, dry weather, it may be necessary to spray logs with water
1-2 times per day and or cover them with a tarp to help hold in humidity.
To check a log’s moisture content, lift it to feel its weight.
If it feels relatively heavy, that means the wood has enough moisture.
The goal is for it to have some moisture, but not to be totally waterlogged.
If it is starting to feel relatively light, like firewood, it is too dry and should be submerged in non-chlorinated water for 1-6 hours to rehydrate. Soaking a log in summer may trigger fruiting, but should not be done more than once every 2 months. Watering/soaking is not necessary during the rainy/humid season.
—
Keep logs out of direct contact with soil, resting on something like bricks or pallets.
Logs can successfully be kept indoors in an unheated area.
—
After 8-12 months the Fungi will have grown throughout the entire log and will begin sprouting mushrooms. With correct care, a log should fruit 2-4 times per year, for 2-5+ years. Throughout Spring/Fall (or after soaking) check logs frequently for any developing mushrooms. Pick mushrooms once their gills are exposed, but before their caps have fully curled out and they begin to dry and toughen.
*Correctly identify that they are safe before consuming any harvested mushrooms*
