Due to its deep roots, it can stabilize soil and prevent erosion, making it suitable for mine spoil sites and soil rehabilitation. This plant is also a source of food for deer, pronghorn, and upland game birds, as well as small rodents and pocket gophers that consume its seeds and roots. Additionally, it has the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil, providing natural fertilization for both itself and nearby species.
