Festuca ammobia (sand fescue) is a perennial grass species closely related to Red fescue. They are basal and compact turning from green to a light blue-grey during the winter months. They grow 8" - 24" and slowly spread via short rhizomes and seed. Their root systems are good at protecting soils from erosion on stream banks, beaches, and upland disturbed soils. These plants usually flower in May or June, creating fruit usually by mid-July. They can tolerate both dry and moist soils with high to low fertility, but usually prefer neutral to slightly acidic conditions.
