Plant Description: An upright, evergreen shrub. This plant grows smooth bark with oblong, firm, dark green leaves that are rust colored on the bottoms. Flowers are similarly light brown-rusty, fluffy, and somewhat insignificant in late summer to fall. Followed by an edible nut that tastes similar to hazelnuts. Nut shells are spikey and bright green, usually containing 1-3 nuts *NEVER CONSUME PLANTS WITHOUT PROPER ID*

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: Most common in dry slopes and mid elevations, this species would be great in xerascaping, at the top of a retaining wall, or berm, where conditions remain dry and drain well. This species is beloved by small mammals, crows, and large birds who will eat its nuts. Excellent in native food forests.
