A famous NW adapted variety with conflicting stories. Possibly named for the Whipple family of the Willamette Valley who grew them in the 19th century; possibly related to the Spanish Tolosana bean from the Basque region. Either way it's beautiful, plump, and delicious.

Direct sow 3-6" apart when the soil is warm, usually around June 1; a late chill can harm beans. Cool weather can harm beans. Stop watering in August, and wait to harvest until pods are completely dry. If wet weather is coming, whole plants can be pulled and dried indoors.
