Woodwardia fimbriata (Giant Chain Fern)

Plant Description: Commonly known as the Giant Chain Fern, Woodwardia fimbriata is the largest fern in all of North America, growing as big as 6 feet tall and wide, with each frond potentially reaching 8 feet long. Called a "Chain Fern" for it's sori form oblong clusters on the underside of each leaflet, resembling a chain.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: Most often found in Southern Oregon Coastal regions as well as Coastal regions of both Washington and California. Chain ferns grows in varying elevations in forests and near springs and streams with full to dappled shade. Add to your conifer or oak woodland garden. Woodwardia is known support woodland butterflies and moths while providing habitat for small mammals as both shade and coverage. Commonly found in companion with Pinus Ponderosa, Quercus species like Black or White oak, Madrona, Cornus, Monkeyflower, other native ferns, and Meadowrue.
