Plant Description: Goodyera oblongifolia is a lesser found orchid native to the Willamette Valley. Plants produce 3-7 thick leaf rosettes that are blue-deep green with white veiny stripes. Flowers are soft white to pale green with a hood that covers the sepals.
Okanagan-Colville, Okanagon, Saanich, Cowlitz, and Nlaka'pamux tribes of the Pacific Northwest have traditionally used Rattlesnake Plantain medicinally in baths to relieve pain and to relieve pain during childbirth. It has also been used to prevent tuberculosis, to treat chest pain, eczema, arthritis, and inflammation.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: We recommend this plant for woodland gardens. Rattlesnake Plantain grows most commonly in conifer and mixed woodland forests in association with Doug Fir, Western Red Cedar, Western Hemlock, Big Leaf Maple, Red Alder, Snowberry, Huckleberry, Ninebark, and Elderberry. Rattlesnake plantain spread via rhizomes and makes a great addition to other native ground covers like redwood sorrel and fringecup.
