Plant Description: Herbaceous perennial that grows in erect clumps of grass-like leaves and round flower stems. Flowers bright purple-red, occasionally white, usually two flowers per stem. The corolla is bright pink with a satiny appearance, and is formed by three petals, three sepals, three protruding yellow stamens and a long, whitish pistil. It is found from British Columbia to northern California, and east to Idaho, northern Nevada and Utah.
Olsynium douglasii is sometimes classified within the Sisyrinchium genus and known as "Sisyrinchium douglasii". It is also known by the common names “Douglas’ grass-widow” and “purple-eyed-grass”.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: Great for rock/gravel gardens as well as in containers. Can be found in rocky bluffs to open oak land habitats, and grows at low-mid elevations in rocky-wet conditions that become dry in late spring. Usually hidden among taller grasses until the vibrant flowers are visible.
