Plant Description: A woody perennial with hairy stems and orange/red flowers with a long bloom season, May-September. Grows from 6 inches up to 3 feet tall. Scarlet paintbrush is most often found in moist sites like meadows, slopes, and ridges, but is adaptable to most soil types and is drought tolerant once established.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: This plant is native to Western North America in low and higher elevation up to 11,000 feet. Attracts hummingbirds. Roots can pull nutrients from neighboring plants but won't completely deplete resources; grow alongside grasses or other established perennials.

Sowing Instructions: Seeds require 3 months of cold stratification, sow outdoors in fall for best results. As a hemi-parisitic plants, this species requires another species as a host to gather much of its nutrients. Sow with grass or other wildflower species or transplants with another species after germination.
