Plant Description: Badge moss is notably large and striking, typically reaching heights of 3–8 cm (1.2–3.1 in). Their leaves are broad and glossy when moist but shrink and lose their sheen when dry. Fertile plants are unisexual, with male plants easily identified by their distinctly flattened heads. The sterile stems have an arched shape, resembling those of strawberry plants.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: Grows directly on the forest floor on humus rich soils or on very old rotten nurse logs. Requires a moist, part to full-shade location where it is very protected from harsh wind and summer sun. Fall, winter, and spring are the active growth seasons. Will naturally dry out and go dormant in summer. This species of moss can grow well inside a terrarium.
