Plant Description: A Mini Meadow Mixer provides a starting template for establishing a
meadow-scape in full-sun to partial shade conditions. The mix of ground covers, upright
flowering perennials, and grasses provide basic vegetative layers to compete with weedy
pioneer species, provide erosion control, temperature regulation, carbon sequestration, dynamic habitat, attractive seasonality, and protection for sowing new seeds in between plantings. Recommendations to further enhance the meadow include adding native bulbs and sowing annuals in-between the “Mini Meadow Mixer plants” as they establish. Each 6-pack covers from 1-3 square feet if planted at 6 in - 1 ft on center using triangulated placement.
● Height: 1-2ft
● Width: 3 ft
● Watering needs: regular, can tolerate dry summers once established by the second year.
● Sun needs: Sun to partial shade (approx. 6 hours direct sunlight)
● Soil needs: moderate to well-drained soils, silt-loam to clay-loam.
● Bloom Time: June-August.
● Portland Plant List (Backyard Habitat Certification): Achillea millefolium and Festuca romeri
Landscape Use and Ecological Function:
Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis var. romeri) provides air-flow between broad-leaved
herbaceous meadow plants, as well as forage and habitat for native vertebrates and
invertebrates. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a drought tolerant ground cover, provides erosion control, possesses medicinal qualities, as well as is an attractant to invertebrates that prey on aphids. Springbank clover (Trifolium wormskioldii) is a nitrogen fixer, provides nectar for native invertebrates, erosion control, and the underground stems are edible (traditionally cooked with Camas). *NEVER CONSUME PLANTS WITHOUT PROPER ID*
