Plant Description: H. triquetrus is a robust, bushy moss that produces shoots ranging from 5 to 15 cm in length, sometimes even reaching 20 cm. Its stems are red and irregularly branched, with leaves that spread out in all directions regardless of whether they are wet or dry. The leaves, which can grow up to 6 mm long, are straight and have a pale, chaffy texture, contributing to the moss's distinctive, somewhat disheveled appearance. Each leaf features a double nerve that extends approximately halfway up the blade, and the edges are slightly toothed. Capsules are infrequent to occasionally present.

  • Height: 20 cm

  • Watering needs: regular moisture

  • Sun needs: part-full shade

  • Soil needs: humus rich

  • Portland Plant List (Backyard Habitat Certification): No

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: Grows directly on the forest floor on humus rich soils or on very old rotten nurse logs. Requires a moist, part to full-shade location where it is very protected from harsh wind and summer sun. Fall, winter, and spring are the active growth seasons. Will naturally dry out and go dormant in summer. This species of moss can grow well inside a terrarium.
