Low growing native perennial, Mountain arnica is a beautiful addition to gardens with moist soils with full to partial sun. In Oregon, their flowers bloom between May to August, adding a pop of yellow with their composite flower heads that supply nectar for an assortment of pollinating species. Their leaves are broad with tapering lengths from the shorter top leaves to the longer and broader leaves at the bottom of the stem.
Mountain arnica primarily spreads through underground rhizomes and self-seeding, making them fun and easy to propagate. These plants have a high germination rate, but have the most success when plants are sown in the fall so the seeds can be stratified through the winter.
Growing: 60-09 days cold-moist stratification. Surface sow and lightly cover (1/4") in fal to winter. Prefers full sun to part shade and well draining soil. Grow in pots or seed flat and divide/transplant in 1-2 years. Once plants are established they require minimal watering. Protect seedling from hungry birds, slugs, and mammals.
