Lonicera hispidula (Pink Honeysuckle) CC DP

Plant Description: A climbing deciduous shrub with large pink flowers. Opposite leaves are variously hairy, sometimes smooth; with the terminal pair joined to form a disc. Pink (or yellow tinged with pink), tubular flowers are born in terminal clusters, accompanied by a pair of axillary clusters. The flowers are two-lipped with the lips about as long as the tube; curling back as the flowers open. Fruits are bright red berries. Stems are hollow.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: This native plant tends to grow on slopes and streambanks at elevations from sea level to 2500 feet. It will climb up larger shrubs or a trellis if available; otherwise it will spread out along the ground. It can be used as a bank filler or as ground cover. The tubular pink flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds and pollinators, and the bitter berries are food for a variety of bird species. It can also be implemented as a deer resistant.
